A Cheesesteak Sizzles In Brooklyn
That's right, I'm doing it. I am dedicating an entire blog post to my absolute, all-time favorite cheesesteak. And why the hell not? What's more delicious than a juicy, greasy, hero filled with a bunch of meat and topped with hot Cheez Wiz? And don't you dare even get me started on ordering any other kind of cheese melted on top.
If you asked the average person where they would expect to taste the best cheesesteak of their lives, their minds will automatically jump to Philadelphia. And once upon a time, so did mine. Jim's was actually at the top of my list for many years. Sadly, they experienced a fire and are temporarily closed. Although this tragic event is not what knocked them out of the top spot. No sir, that honor goes to Fedoroff's simply making a better cheesesteak.
I came across Fedoroff's the same way I do most of the new restaurants and bars I visit - scrolling through Instagram. I have been burned more than once though by the tasty food I see posted, so I didn't have the highest hopes going into it. I definitely did not expect to absolutely fall in love with the cheesesteak one bite in. But alas, I did and no one has heard the end of it since.I talk about their cheesesteak so much and recommend it to so many people that you would actually suspect that I secretly work for the company and get paid commission in cheesesteaks. I promise you that is not the case, although I wouldn't turn it down if they wanted to offer (just kidding!).
Last year I managed to convince almost my entire spring softball team to taste it - our home bar was right next door and I insisted the cheesesteak would be much better than anything they could order there. Of course, we had to sit outside so they could eat it and I can't imagine the bar was too thrilled with me. My teammates, on the other hand, were super happy and impressed and ordered from them multiple weeks after the games. This definitely gave my argument clout, but in me eyes the biggest test to the deliciousness of Fedoroff's cheesesteak was my brother Dennis. He was the one who originally told me to check out Jim's. He had been to many locations in Philadelphia and thought Jim's far outweighed the competition. Last year he finally made the trip into Brooklyn to see what all my hype was about and he agreed it was one of the best cheesesteaks he's eaten. It didn't beat Jim's to him, but it was close. Coming from him, that is very high praise if you ask me.
Out of all the people I have recommended this cheesesteak to, there is exactly one person who got mad at me for suggesting it and that was my friend Jon. This had absolutely nothing to do with the actual food though and everything to do with having to go out of our way for me to get it during a day of heavy drinking. He passed up on ordering one himself and am pretty sure he still regrets it, although he will probably never admit it (love you Jon!). It didn't help that the next brewery we went to had really terrible empanadas and I might have thrown that in his face once or twice.
So what is it about Fedoroff's cheesesteak that I love exactly? That's easy. They chop up their meat and their onions and blend them together nicely. The hero has tons of meat and Cheez Wiz. And the bread they put it on holds up under the weight and ingredients. Plus it gets a little greasy in all the best ways. Craig and I usually get a large and share it - but secretly I always want my own.
I have also read and been told that Fedoroff's makes a killer roast pork sandwich - which is not surprising since their full name is technically Fedoroff's Roast Pork. Maybe one of these days I will actually try it. It's hard to make the trip all the way there and pass up a cheesesteak though. Plus, I am pretty sure every single time I've been there the pork sandwich has been sold out. Part of me is left to wonder if it actually exists.
In my "non-expert but I eat enough that you can trust it" opinion, Fedoroff's is definitely worth the trip into Brooklyn. If you need more convincing, just check out all the tasty looking photos on their Instagram and Facebook.
